This renovation project begins by respecting what the house already is: a 1940s apartment with a mixed structure—timber floor structure in the bedrooms and living room, and reinforced concrete in the kitchen—which reached us with the natural wear and tear of decades of life. The wooden flooring, heavily aged, could not be viably restored. The decision was made to remove the existing floor and install new pine planks, returning the same aesthetic language to the space, but with dignity. Simultaneously, because a house of this age requires looking at what is not seen, we treated the joist structure with Xilofene (an invisible but essential care to prolong the life of what supports everything else). In the bathroom, the challenge was different: the space was small, and the solution involved making the most of it. The masonry countertops were finished in microcement—a continuous, clean, and resistant surface. On the floor and shower walls, grey ceramics were used to unify without overcomplicating. Conclusion: what was worn was renewed, what still had value was protected, and a coherence that time had diluted was returned to the apartment.
