Villa renovation

Year:

2022

This villa in Colares had been uninhabited for some time. The renovation sought to bring it back to life, starting with a comprehensive intervention that reorganized the spaces and strengthened the relationship with the outdoors. One of the main challenges involved clearing the garden: the small outdoor compartments that fragmented the space gave way to a more open and continuous living experience. In the living room, a large glazed opening looks out onto the garden, allowing the landscape to become part of daily life and light to travel through the interior throughout the day. As this is the main gathering area of the house, we sought to reinforce its centrality through a generous clear-height and the reconstruction of the wooden joists on the ceiling—elements that evoke the character of country houses. The kitchen was also designed as part of this shared living experience. The island serves as a focal point and contributes to a more fluid relationship between the different spaces in the social area. In the end, the house regained its identity, finding a new balance between architecture, nature, and the way its inhabitants move through it daily.
